Another similar webcam installation in Norway

Two Mobotix Webcams were installed on the nacelle of the Enercon E-40 wind turbine.

One camera is taking a picture of the blade every 15 minutes (blade detection by video motion detection). The second camera is taking regular pictures of the Thies Ultrasonic anemometer mounted on the nacelle of the wind turbine.
With these camera images, ice accretion on the blades of the wind turbine can be observed and analysed. Below you see photos of the installed camera. The lamp on the right is for heating purpose.

The installation of the camera was documented by Swiss television. See it here (german).

Below you find some sample images. Click on image to see it in original size.

The images below show a heating cycle of the E-40 recorded on Februar 27th, 2006. On the images of 08:33 and 08:48 ice can be observed on the blade. At 10:30 the heating system of the wind turbine switches on for 1.5h. The following images nicely show how the ice melts until the blade is icefree again. Click on image to see it in original size.
