Energy Forecasts

Meteotest is specialized in weather forecasts in the field of energy and power production. Due to our expertise in wind and solar power planning projects, we can offer first grade production forecasts for wind and solar power. We have developed methodologies that take the increased requirements in complex topography into account. Nevertheless, we do not only deliver power forecasts for Switzerland, but also for all of Europe and other continents. For power load forecasts, we deliver information on the temperature development for the next hours and days.

For power trading and power plant steering purposes, the following time horizons are of primary interest:

  • Short-term forecasts for the next day are the basis for determining production shedules.
  • Shortest-term forecasts for the next 6 hours support quick decisions on the power market and for power plant steering purposes.

Our forecasts are based on the global weather model GFS and the regional weather model WRF, allowing us to calculate temporally and spatially highly resolved weather forecasts for any region world wide. These forecasts are optimized for individual power plants based on their current and historical power production data.

The uncertaintes of the forecasts can be determined through ensemble calculations by initializing the weather model with several slightly differing starting conditions. From the result's variations, the forecast's stability can be determined.

Our forecasts are delivered automatically according to the client's demands (FTP, e-mail, webservice etc.). For clients who require a personal briefing, we offer a separate service.

Wind power forecasts

We provide forecasts of both wind speed and power production. The data can be visualized on a protected website or delivered as a webservice according to the client's requirements. If provided by the client, current and historical production and measurement data can be taken into account in order to optimize the forecasts.

PV forecasts

A PV system's power production is calculated based on the irradiation calculated in the model. When irradiation is transformed to power production, the PV system's technical specifications (orientation, module and inverter types, type of mounting etc.) have to be correctly taken into account. Here we take advantage of our know-how from the PV monitoring portal SPYCE.

Load forecasts

For estimating loads, temperature data are essential. We provide these as well as other meteorological parameters (e.g. irradiation for estimation of energy consumption for lighting purposes) to our clients.
